Doodles, Doodles, Doodles

Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Aussiedoodle, Sheepadoodle, Bernadoodle - any breed mixed with a poodle, and you get a "DOODLE". The popularity of Doodles has increased in the last few years but education on this hybrid breed has stayed way behind. Potential Doodle owners do not realize what they’re setting themselves up to. The Doodles cute and fluffy features require consistent brushing and grooming maintenance in order to keep that teddy bear-like quality. Without the proper grooming and maintenance, Doodle owners experience, “the dreaded shave-down”. What a letdown it is for both owner and groomer to have a furry Doodle shaved down completed and no longer look like the cute teddy bear they should look like!! Sound familiar? We've all been there! Doodle owners get upset and blame the groomers, who are just as unhappy with having to shave them down.  The most important Doodle grooming tips is consistent, daily brushing. If Doodle owners do this every day, they prevent the dreaded shave down.

Why are Doodles’ hair different? How can shaving be avoided? How often should Doodles be groomed?

Doodle Hair Coats

Doodles have all types of different coats; from flat, wavy, to extremely curly. Doodle coats may be very similar to a Poodle, or it can resemble a Labradors coat. Regardless of the coat type, regular brushing is most important in order to prevent matting and shaving. Mating is common in areas where there is typically a lot of friction or movement and also in areas where moisture is easily trapped. Some areas prone to matting to be aware of are underneath the collar and under the harness, joints, tail, behind the ears and in the beard or mustache area.

What can Doodle owners do?

Keep a regular grooming schedule and routine. Doodles with coats shorter than 1 inch should be groomed every 4-6 weeks with brushing and combing at least 3 times per week at home.  Doodles with coats longer than 1 inch should be groomed every 2-4 weeks with daily brushing and combing at home. Short or long, a well-groomed and maintained Doodle can have a variety of haircut and trims making them look extra cute!

When can Doodles start to get groomed?

Do not wait!  Start the grooming process young, approximately around 8 weeks.  Early grooming helps the Doodle puppy get used to the groomer and grooming process. The groomer will start with a bath and brushing, which will get puppy comfortable with the sounds of the scissors, clippers, nail drill and dryer. This will ultimately prepare the puppy for full grooming sessions as they grow making it less stressful for the puppy. The doodle and the groomer will build a trusting relationship and grooming will be an enjoyable experience for both the Doodle and the groomer. Owners, it is important to find a groomer who is experienced with Doodles and has the patience to groom them.

What brush and comb can be used?

Doodle owners, it a good idea to invest in some supplies to maintain your furry pal in between grooming appointments.  Remember regular brushing is key! Make it a habit to brush and comb your Doodle daily.  Keep a slicker brush and comb handy. That way, you can give your Doodle a quick brush while watching TV. It only takes a couple minutes and has easily become a part of our routine!
